Environment and Economy: The Solution can be found in Technology
The climate change debate has intensified with the student protests and the European elections. But apart from loud and sometimes even simple slogans, the economy is already expanding in many areas, pushing energy efficiency and climate protection forward with concrete technological solutions. What is already possible today was demonstrated by the „Innovators of the Year 2019“.
Whether it is the new generation of pumps ‘Magna3’ by Grundfos, with its new function that offers an energy-saving maximum value called FlowLimit for the flowrate, or energy efficiency „as a service“ on the new MEERX platform: Several of the „Innovators of the Year 2019“ are focusing on aspects of environmental protection. Two solutions which clearly aim at sustainability even won the audience awards: AAA Efficiency and Phoenix Contact E-Mobility.
The Public Votes also Went to Environmental Protection
The topics of environment and energy are obviously not just a concern for pupils and the European elections. 13,000 entrepreneurs and executives voted for these two candidates in the public voting (in addition to the smart home solution GROHE Sense). During the ceremony, Laureate Dr. Wladimir Klitschko presented the awards to two solutions that are closely connected to the topics of climate protection and energy (to Corinna Ebel of AAA Efficiency as shown in the image above). For DDW editor in chief Michael Oelmann the result of the voting prove yet another aspect: „Both companies demonstrate that real progress does not lie in deindustrialization and prohibitions, but in technological innovation“.
For example AAA Efficiency: as a completely easily installable modular module, this technology converts residual heat into CO2 neutral electricity. The method allows the usage of minimal residual waste heat, which as yet has not found use, even by existing energy recovery systems. The result is the most CO2-neutral power supply imaginable, because it is powered by „waste heat“ instead of generating electricity. Furthermore, it can be produced at much lower cost than any other power-generating method such as coal-fired power plants, gas-fired power plants, nuclear power plants, photovoltaics or wind turbines.
The innovative method made in Germany could soon make a definite measurable contribution to energy efficiency worldwide – and not only for noble reasons of environmental protection. But also because it provides the companies that use it with „hard cash“ due to additional energy recovery. For almost every production facility, but also, for example, on ships, energy conservation potential can be increased and, in addition, CO2 certificates become available.
The second winner of this year’s audience award, Phoenix Contact E-Mobility GmbH, also provides a specific solution with its high-power charging technology. The company’s HPC Charging Plug will soon make it possible to charge an electric car in only three to five minutes for 100 kilometers of range. This will make charging a car almost as quick as the conventional visit to the gas station. The company has developed innovative technology that could become a key component towards the mobility of the future. Because, no matter how fast plans are discussed when it comes to reforming mobility: for the structural expansion including charging stations and a comparable convenience to conventional refueling, not only patience and goodwill but also a lot of money and above all engineering excellence is needed.
Inventiveness in the Entire Scope of the Economy
Examples from the „Innovators of the Year 2019“ awards show that the inventive mind necessary for environmental protection has already found its place across the entire scope of the economy. While Grundfos and Phoenix Contact E-Mobility are the birthplace of innovations by established, large companies, MEERX has turned the subject into a service as well as a platform. And at AAA Efficiency, DDW judges and readers are learning how technological innovation at an early stage is finding its way into the real world: the corporation soon plans to go public and is now offering premarket subscriptions for a limited period of time (see infobox).
This year’s audience award winner AAA Efficiency is not only an example of how technology can be a crucial component for more energy efficiency and climate protection. The Innovator of the Year also shows how technological innovations develop within the market economy as opposed to being imposed by the government. AAA Efficiency builds on innovative methods. The use of the technology provides for an operational model in which the electricity revenue consistently flows to the companies, the AAA and, as a result, also to the investors of the plants. This win-win model ensures the best possible use of the global market potential for converting waste and waste heat into CO2-neutral electricity. In addition, the company does not rely on funds by the government, but on businesses and consumers: the market entrance is to be financed via an STO, a security token offering, as it were, a digital IPO. Currently, a so-called „Friends & Family“ period is starting, in which interested parties can invest in the technology with appropriate discounts before the stock market launch. Additional state control will then later be applied by the business user. CO2-neutral electricity is already being subsidized by the government and the current political discussions surrounding CO2 taxes, CO2 certificates and a new tax climate concept provide for massive tax deductions and exemptions for companies that modernize their production and business, setting new environmental standards or producing in a CO2-neutral manner.
